Dr. Gomez received an associate degree in Applied Science/Respiratory Therapy at El Paso Community College in 1982, a bachelor of science in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry, at the University of El Paso, and in 1986, his M.D. from The University of Texas Health Science Center Medical School at Houston, in Houston, Texas. Dr. Gomez completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, his medical oncology fellowship at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and his hematology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. In 1998, Dr. Gomez completed his masters of science in Health Administration at Trinity University in San Antonio. Dr. Gomez has authored and co-authored many articles in peer reviewed journals.
