Sabrina Q. Mikan, Ph.D., RN, ACNS-BC
General Summary
Dr. Sabrina Mikan is director of supportive care programs for Texas Oncology. Dr. Mikan is also a clinical nurse specialist, an advanced practice provider, at Texas Oncology-Austin Central. Her career includes clinical care, nursing research, and teaching undergraduate and graduate students at The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing. She has worked in palliative and hospice care in for more than 14 years.
Dr. Mikan is involved in the program development and clinical aspects of patient care statewide. Specifically, she contributes to the care of individuals with advanced stage cancers, assists with advance care planning, and connecting individuals to and following them after referrals to palliative medicine all with a focus on improving individual quality of life. She is director of three programs statewide — Therapy Review and Coordination, My Choices, My Wishes Advance Care Planning, and Empowering Wellness Cancer Survivorship.
In addition to programs, Dr. Mikan is involved in research to improve quality of life for family caregivers of cancer patients and bereaved family caregivers. She has presented her research findings at national and international conferences including the International Congress of Palliative Medicine, Oncology Nursing Society Annual Congress, Center for Health Promotion Research at UT Austin, MD Anderson Cancer Center, the Center to Advance Palliative Care and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Mikan is an adjunct clinical professor of nursing at The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing. In this role she serves as a clinical preceptor and professional mentor for master’s and doctoral students. She routinely gives lectures on palliative care, advance care planning, and survivorship at UT Austin, Concordia University, and Austin Community College.

Her dissertation and area of research is palliative medicine and quality of life focusing on pain management in the adult HIV/AIDS population.
Other Information
Dr. Mikan is a young philanthropist and completed the LBJ School of Public Affairs RGK Center’s Portfolio Program in Philanthropy due to her passion for health care advocacy. Her extracurricular activities include traveling for leisure to various parts of Europe and volunteering. She has volunteered in the Bahamas, Thailand and Lusaka, Zambia. She enjoys the cultural arts, including visiting museums, attending performances of the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Ballet Austin, Zachary Scott Theater and a variety of events. Film and music are some of her passions, especially documentary films.
